I earned my Residential Design certification from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, after studying Interior Design at Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan Universities. During that same time, I gained valuable hands-on experience working for La-Z-Boy, IKEA and Traemand, a company that offered kitchen installation services for IKEA US.
I value my education completely, but nothing can be said for real work experience. Ask anyone, they’ll tell you I’ve been a designer since I was 6 making wallpaper for my Barbie house and following my parents around as they did small home improvements projects to visiting new homes, they were having built. If I am being totally honest, my mom is the one who taught me how to put an anchor in the wall to hang a piece of art, which is something I do now regularly!
When asked “Amy - what's your style as a designer?" I often respond with “I am Designer without style”. That may sound odd when you read that the first time but let me better explain...
I learned within my different roles at retail companies that every single person (customer) truly does have their own unique style and I would be a better designer for them if I removed style groups and themed details from our conversations. I put 99% of client’s I meet in the eclectic box which simply means – we are open to anything which makes each project so much more fun. A style direction is necessary to start off the planning process but let’s take the time to learn what that means for you in your own home.
I share my #1 design rule with each and every client. To have a successful project, you must focus on color, material, texture and pattern – with a HUGE emphasis on function planning.
If that results in a space that is more Mid-Century Modern or Farm City, well then that’s just fine by me. I want the client to be open to mixing in those treasured pieces they love with what makes sense in the space, no matter which style wheelhouse it falls into. I believe this rule gives clients the confidence they need to make better decisions throughout the process, as they create their own unique and perfectly planned space!
I love what I do and the client’s that graciously hire me to be a part of their homes. I am grateful for every day I get to do what I love and share it in such a unique way!
Lydia comes from a creative family that has supported her many talents as she has grown up embracing and learning more about each.
Outside of her passion for Interior Design she also makes beautiful cakes, enjoys all types of music and sprucing up her family's homes for the holidays.
She works along side Amy, as she continues her education at Eastern Michigan University, to gain valuable "On the Job" experience. It's a pleasure having Lydia on board. She is a great addition to the r.r. team!
